Fukuoka has projected new campaign as we expressed appreciation to foreign visitors “Thank you (Arigatou) for visiting” after the 3.11.The purpose is to remind of Fukuoka with deeply impression.

After the disaster,The cruise ship ”Legend of the Seas” has been coming back to the port from 3^rd of AUG.

Cruise Ship passengers can receive “Uchiwa(Fan)” which is designed campaign logo mark.

They may also have an opportunity to get campaign badge at Tenjin and Hakata shopping district and sightseeing spots.

Large-scale Insentive Tour from Thailand Came to Kyushu

Against the unfavorable trend of Japan’s tourism, a big group of Thai company visited Fukuoka and Kyushu for an incentive tour.

The group of Summit Queen Ltd., a Hokkaido Lingerie Company based in Thailand, arrived in Fukuoka Airport in two groups.

The total of 230 tour members were enthusiastically greeted by staff of Kyushu District Transport Bureau, Kyushu Tourism Promotion Organization and Fukuoka Convention & Visitors Bureau as they emerged from the gate, with a message from Commissioner of Japan Tourism Agency displayed on the screen along with banners in Thai.

One of the factors that brought big groups from Thailand back to Kyushu was the effect of the promotional activities that have been going on since a couple of years ago in collaboration among Fukuoka City, FCVB and Kyushu Tourism Promotion Organization.

Last year, a delegation of Fukuoka City and the Convention Bureau visited Bangkok and Cheng Mai to promote traffic on both ways between Thailand and Fukuoka.

They brought guidebooks and maps in Thai language as well as suggestions of tour courses to the local tourism agencies.

This time’s tour was organized by one of the agencies who received their visits, and the members of the promotional visit are very happy to see their project baring fruit in the current circumstances.

We hope that the Thai visitors will bring back a wonderful memory from their trip around Kyushu, and become a leveraging power to increase tourists from their homeland.

Join the Open Symposium with Dr. Muhammad Yunus !

Kyushu University Grameen Creative Lab jointly presents a public symposium titled “Social Business Forum Asia in Fukuoka 2011 (SBFA2011)” with Fukuoka City Hall, featuring Dr. Muhammad Yunus, an honorary professor of Kyushu University and the recipient of Novel Peace Prize for founding the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh. The Symposium focuses on how Dr. Yunus’ model of social business could be employed to help recovery of the sustainable lifestyle of residents in Tohoku region, who are still suffering from the massive damage caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake.

Welcoming Dr. Yunus who is also a recipient of Fukuoka Asian Culture Grand Prize in 2001, this symposium is expected to become a milestone for Fukuoka City residents in general, who seek the best way to take part in the extensive and long-term support for disaster victims.

All those who are interested, do join this session – free of charge – to share your ideas about how an individual can make a difference in tackling the uphill work of reconstruction, hand in hand with the people on site and also from overseas.

Inspectors from ASEAN Cruise Ship Division visited Fukuoka!

The members of ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) Cruise Division made an inspection tour to Fukuoka on 1^st of JUNE.

Representing Malaysia, Philippines and Singapore, they came to Kyushu to survey the current status and provisions for cruise ship reception in major ports.

The delegation had a discussion with relevant departments of Fukuoka City Government in order to learn about the City’s measures to enhance systems to welcome foreign visitors.

The delegation found Fukuoka’s unique system particularly educational, in which the City Government, Convention Bureau and volunteer citizens are collaborating in guiding cruise visitors.

Expecting cruise ships to resume their tours to Fukuoka in August after a long break since 3.11 disasters, Fukuoka City regards it imperative to further reinforce its system and function to receive visitors for the years to come.

Arrival of MS Bremen to Port of Hakata!

An Adventure Cruise Ship “MS Bremen” arrived at Port of Hakata on 3^rd of JUNE.

Staff from Kyushu District Transport Bureau, Fukuoka City Hall and Fukuoka Convention and Visitors Bureau (FCVB) welcomed the Ship with a banner saying "Welcome to Fukuoka”.

A new facility called “Welcome Gate” were opened especially for the tour participants at the port, and the passengers of Bremen enjoyed gathering information and shopping for Hakata confectionaries and souvenirs there.

Around 8:30 a.m., most of the passengers went out for Bus tours to nearby tourist sites including Fukuoka tower, Dazaifu, Kyushu National Arts museum and City suburbs.

Meanwhile, Fukuoka City officials led by Mayor Takashima went on board to hold a welcome ceremony.

A Cruise Coordinator, Mrs. Gabriele Engler, gave them a tour inside the ship with detailed explanation about the interior facilitiy and the ship's operation.

MS Bremen is a ship based in Hamburg, Germany, with the passenger capacity of 168 persons and Gross Tonnage of 6752. The idea of its tours is to take passengers on adventures through the most spectacular environments on the planet, with expeditions around the world led by a team of experts.

The interior of the ship was decorated with pictures of wild animals to show the company's tour theme "Fronteer Spirit".

The connection between the cruise company and Japan goes back a long way since Mitsubishi Heavy material built the ship in Kobe Shipyard in 1990.

To celebrate the strong ties with the prestegious cruise company, Mayor Takashima opened the ceremony with his speech and gave a memorial plaque to Mr.Roman Obrist, the captain of the ship, as a token of their friendship.

More gifts were presented from Fukuoka City such as a plaque made of Aritayaki pottery and Hakata doll, along with a bouquet given by Mr. Matsumoto, Chief Executive of Fukuoka City Port and Harbor Bureau, to Mrs. Engler.

After closing the ceremony with a speech, Captain Obrist gave a special tour for the group around the Bridge-wheel horse. Along the corridor, he showed the memorabilias presented by the previous ports and said that one from Fukuoka City will be displayed among them.

After a short stay in Fukuoka, MS Bremen headed for the next destiination Osaka being waved farewell by Fukuokan people and the sound of drum orchestra as they departed.

Japanese Hakata Cultural Experience Programs

School Exchange

Some schools organize overseas school excursions or language-learning programs, and have sister schools in other countries to develop mutual international understanding and exchange.
Many students from overseas are actually visiting schools in Kyushu to have international exchange. They spend a few hours participating in activities such as attending class, having cultural exchange, interaction in club activities, or having lunch with the students. In just few hours, students become friends with each other which lead to an unforgettable experience.

Fruit Picking

There are many fruit picking sites in Fukuoka prefecture that is within 1 hour bus ride from Fukuoka city. Various Japanese fruits such as strawberry, apple, grape, pear, tomato, blueberry, kiwi, persimmon, mandarin orange, etc., which are famous for their sweet deliciousness can be picked and tasted. 01. The seaside area, "Momochi District" and Ruins of Fukuoka Castle Approx. 3 hours

Fukuoka City Museum

This museum has special exhibition rooms and two types of permanent exhibition rooms: one introducing Fukuoka’s history of international exchange and four for classified exhibitions. The exhibits include the Gold Seal a national treasure, (presented from the Han Dynasty Emperor to Japanese Na King), and artifacts excavated from the Korokan Ruins.

Fukuoka Tower

This 234 meter high structure covered with 8,000 two way mirrors is the tallest seaside tower in Japan. The 360 degree panoramic view of the city and Hakata Bay from the observation room at a height of 123 meters is breathtaking.

OhoriPark/ Japanese Garden

The lake in this park used to be a part of Fukuoka Castle by Kuroda Nagamasa, the feudal lord of the region. This Ohori Park, rich in greenery and encircling a lake two kilometers in circumference, is now an oasis for city residents who enjoy boating, bird watching and other activities.

Ruins of Fukuoka Castle

Nagamasa Kuroda started work on the castle in 1601 and the construction continued seven years. The ruins of what is also known as Maizuru Castle are now a public park and a well-known destination for cherry and Japanese plum blossom viewing.

Korokan Historical Museum

Korokan was an official guest house established in the heian period and served as a center for international exchanges. A replica of the lodging house and excavated china are among exhibits at this museum.

Yanagibashi Market

A market that opened in early Showa era, which is known as the “kitchen of Hakata”, since many pro chefs and citizens come to find fresh and seasonal foods. You can hear the Hakata people's lively voices with their accent.

Yusentei Garden

Built by Tsugutaka Kuroda, the 6th lord of Chikuzen Kuroda Clan, this villa features an admirable Japanese garden designed around a pond that changes color and mood with each season. A tea ceremony room is available by reservation for a fee.

Kanzanso

Traditional Japanese Restaurant on top of the small hill in the middle of Fukuoka. You can enjoy Japanese Kaiseki overlooking the beautiful scenery of Fukuoka City.

Itazuke Ruins Yayoi-kan Museum

Here stand the ruins of a settlement where rice farming in Japan started. Outside the museum, pit dwellings of the village have been restored. By the surrounding moat, you can learn hands-on how to plant rice and built a fire.

Fukuoka City Archeology Center

Artifacts and records from city ruins are stocked, classified, and made available for public viewing. You can also find exhibits detailing methods for discovering and excavating ruins. Archaeology lectures are offered.

Kanenokuma Ruins

These are the ruins of a cemetery from the early to the late Yayoi period, which are designated as a national historic site situated in a park of historic interest.

Ishikura Brewery

This is the only Japanese sake brewery in the city. A video demonstrating the ways sake is made is presented in Japanese, English and Korean. You can taste sake and have lunch in the brewery.

Tochoji Temple

The oldest Buddist temple in Japan of the Singon sect, founded by Kobo Daishi, otherwise known as Kukai. The temple hosts the wooden “God of mercy with 1,000 hands,” which is designated a nationally important cultural property, and the largest wooden statue of Buddha in Japan.

Hakata Machiya Folk Museum

This museum is a restored Hakata townhouse (machiya) and recreates Hakata town during the Meiji and Taisho eras (around the turn of the 20th cent.). The lifestyle and culture of Hakata in the early 20th century is introduced and there are daily demonstrations of traditionalcraftwork such as Hakata-ori textiles and Hakata dolls.

Rakusuien Park

A Japanese garden and a tea room in a serene atmosphere. The park was developed on the site of a Meiji era (late 19th century) villa belonging to a well-to-do Hakata merchant.

Canal City Hakata

Canal City Hakata, with a canal running through its center, is a commercial complex that houses hotels, theatre, cinema complex, specialty shops, restaurants, and more. This is one of the highly popular spots in Hakata.

Kushida Shrine

The shrine is believed to have been built in 757 and is home to the Hakata Gion Yamakasa Festival, one of the city's main events held annually in July. One of the decorative floats of Gion Yamakasa Festival is displayed.

1 hour from Fukuoka city center within nature filled town of Koishiwara. You can view their exhibitions and actually experience making ceramics.

07. City of Ancient Culture-Dazaifu with 1300 years of History Approx. 5 hours

Kanzeonji Temple

The temple was regarded as one of the core temples in Kyushu when completed in 746. Located here is the country's oldest temple bell, which has been designated as a national treasure or important cultural property of Japan along with about 20 statues of the Buddha dating back 800 to 1000 years.

Dazaifu Tenmangu Shrine

Dedicated to Michizane Sugawara, the God of Learning, this shrine has the main hall, the sacred Tobiume (legendary plum tree), and the treasure hall. While going to the shrine, there are many souvenir shops, restaurants, and traditional crafts shops along the street, which is fun to look at.

Komyozenji Temple

This zen temple was founded in 1273, and is well known in particular for its rhododendrons and autumn leaves, and is the only temple in Kyushu that has karesansui (dry landscape) stone gardens.

Kyushu National Museum

It is a extremely unique museum focusing on the history of exchange between Japan and other parts of Asia. It is the country's fourth national museum which opened in 2005.

Shotoen (Ohanatei)

The Villa of Tachibana Feudal Lord's Wife with pond and pine trees that are 280 years old. It is now known as "Ohanatei" garden

River Cruise (Kawakudari)

Cruise on a poled boat down the river, which is the major attraction of this old castle town. Passengers can enjoy the view of red brick warehouses of the early 20th century and traditional Japanese style storehouses. Peach tree blossoms, willow leaves, irises and cosmoses please the visitors on boats.

Unagi no Seiromushi (Steamed Eel)

Steamed eel is the local specialty food of Yanagawa. It is steamed rice and broiled eel with sugar and soy sauce, topped with a thinly and finely sliced omelet. It is a very popular dish among locals and visitors.

Visit the pottery kiln and the wholesale area where 25 porcelain shops open along the street in the area. You can buy good quality Arita porcelains.

Imari

Imari ceramics are also another famous pottery, where painting is done on white ceramic. Expensive good quality Imari ceramics were handed to Daimyo, Shogun (warriors) and to the Emperor of the period. Those techniques are handed down to the present pottery makers.

Numerous pictures, reconstructions and remnants of the disaster caused by an atomic bomb tell the truth about the devastation and the misery of the war, and appeal to realize a peaceful world without nuclear weapons.

Glover Garden

The former house of British merchant Thomas Glover and other 19th century buildings are preserved in this spacious hillside garden overlooking Nagasaki Harbor.

A fascinating old town, Usuki is also home to a mysterious series of more than 60 Buddhist images that were carved into a cliff face about 800 years ago.

Kumamoto Castle

The enormous Kumamoto Castle is one of the three most famous castles in Japan along with Osaka Castle and Nagoya Castle. Designed by Lord Kiyomasa Kato, it features unique stone walls called Musha-gaeshi, a device invented to prevent ninjas or other enemies from invading.

Mt. Aso

Mt. Aso is the world's largest compound volcano, with a huge crater basin 18km from east to west and 24km from north to south, from the center of which five peaks called the Aso gogaku soar up toward the sky. Mt. Nakadake is still an active volcano, and you maybe able to see the red hot bottom of the crater or even the pools of boiling lava.

Nightlife

There are hundreds of restaurants and bars, each with their own special atmosphere, for delegates to enjoy after congress.
Fukuoka offers wide selection of restaurants and bars, from local Japanese tastes such as fresh fish and sushi from the nearby sea, Hakata Ramen(noodles in pork soup), and tempura, to Asian, French, Italian, and Fusion cuisines.

1. Fukuoka's Nightlife District, Nakasu

Nakasu is the place to go after dark. This is the largest nightlife entertainment quarter in Kyushu, where many business men gather for a drink after work. There are over 2,000 restaurants and bars along the river, and the neon lights are worth to look at.

2. Street Stalls

One of the special features of nighttime Fukuoka is "yatai", street stalls which appear on the streets in the evening in Nakasu, Tenjin, and other areas. Yatai offer a range of hot tasty foods including Hakata Ramen(noodles served in pork broth) and a chance to rub shoulders with the locals.

3. Hakata Bay Cruises "Mariera"

Fukuoka is blessed with a large natural harbor, Hakata Bay, which in 1274 and 1281 came under attack from Mongolian forces dispatched by Kublai Khan. On both occasions enemy forces were defeated with the help of timely typhoons. It is now possible to cruise this tranquil bay, with or without an accompanying meal, on the "Mariera". The vessel is also available for hire to large groups for parties.

4. Japanese Style Ryotei Restaurant & Hakata Geisha

There are still Japanese style Ryotei (Restaurants) in Fukuoka city, and you can enjoy the dance performance by Hakata Geisha while having delicious Japanese Kaiseki Cuisine.

5. Nakasu Yakata-Bune

How would you like to ride on a yakata-bune (a ship) between the river of Fukuoka's entertainment district, Nakasu, and enjoy Japanese culture? You can view the city lights of Nakasu, while having seafood barbeque, Hakata's specialty hot pot dish, Tempura or Sushi.
