Sustainability

Environmental Considerations

Among Fukuoka City's sustainability initiatives, we wish to highlight efforts that emphasize environmental responsibility, especially those targeting CO₂ reduction to combat climate change.

Fukuoka Green NEXT

Fukuoka Green NEXT is promoting new initiatives that seek to improve society by making use of forests and greenery. In doing the it aims to create an environment that supports a sustainable, comfortable, and fulfilling life for citizens, and can be inherited by future generations.

Hakata Bay Blue Carbon Offset Program

Plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere through photosynthesis and store it as carbon. The carbon fixed by terrestrial vegetation, such as forests, is referred to as 'green carbon.' In contrast, carbon absorbed and stored in the ocean by marine organisms such as seagrass (like eelgrass), seaweed, and phytoplankton is known as 'blue carbon.’

One Person, One Flower Campaign

The 'One Person, One Flower' initiative is a citywide movement in which citizens, businesses, and the local government each play a role in beautifying Fukuoka by planting flowers in parks, along sidewalks, at workplaces, and in homes. By encouraging flower cultivation in all corners of the city, the initiative aims to enrich the lives of residents, strengthen community connections, and enhance the charm and value of the city through the power of flowers.
